3D scanning is a technology that captures the physical shape and dimensions of objects or environments by creating a detailed digital representation using lasers, structured light, or other scanning methods.

Westurn is proud to be a leader in the Western Australian engineering industry, through early adoption of 3D scanning into our manufacturing business. In early 2020, with funding support from the Australian Government’s Manufacturing Modernisation Fund, we purchased our state-of-the-art 3D scanner and Reverse Engineering software, and in the following four years have become experts in industrial component reverse engineering.

Creaform GoScan 3D Scanner

Westurn currently uses a Creaform GoScan 3D scanner, a structured light scanner renowned for its speed, versatility, and accuracy. It is ideal for parts from 10mm-4m in size; has a maximum accuracy of 0.05mm (+0.15mm/m), and a minimum point resolution of 0.2mm. Unlike many handheld laser scanners, it doesn’t always require use of sticky target dots, meaning superfast setup and cleanup times.
It is the ideal machine for castings such as bearing- and gearbox housings, impellers etc; car and small truck bodies and interiors; fabricated structures and pipe spools; and machined components.

Geomagic Design X Scan-to-CAD Software

While raw scan data can be used for part inspections, manufacturing parts from a 3D scan first requires the creation of a functional parametric 3D model. Geomagic Design X is purpose-built, top-of-the-line Reverse Engineering software for this Scan-to-CAD process.

With proprietary features allowing automatic creation of 2D profiles and 3D surfaces, Design X helps us to create accurate, detailed CAD models from 3D scans faster than any other solution available.

Utilising Creaform VxModel and GOM Inspect software, we can conduct manufacturing QC part inspections, or analyse component wear or damage after use in the field, presented in as much detail as required up to and including full reports with breakdowns of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) characteristics.
